NFPA 1: Fire Code

Requirements cover the full range of fire and life safety issues from fire protection systems and equipment and occupant safety in new and existing buildings to hazardous materials, flammable and combustible liquids, LP-Gas.

NFPA 10: Standard for portable fire extinguisher

Criteria cover installations for Class A, B, C, D, and K hazards as well as the selection, inspection, maintenance, recharging, and testing of portable fire extinguishing equipment. Includes a list of obsolete fire extinguishers that should be removed from service.

NFPA 12: Standard on Carbon Dioxide Extinguishing System

This standard contains minimum requirements for carbon dioxide fire-extinguishing systems. 1.1.2 This standard includes only the necessary essentials to make it workable in the hands of those skilled in this field. A.1.1 Portable carbon dioxide equipment is covered in NFPA 10.

NFPA 13: Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems

Comprehensive requirements include sprinkler system design, installation, and acceptance testing; hanging and bracing systems; underground piping; and seismic protection in line with SEI/ASCE 7. NFPA 13 also includes provisions for special storage arrangements.

NFPA 14: Standard for the Installation of Standpipe and Hose Systems

Provisions cover all system components and hardware, including piping, fittings, valves, and pressure-regulation devices, as well as system requirements; installation requirements; design; plans and calculations; water supply; and system acceptance.

NFPA 20: Standard for the Installation of Stationary Pumps for Fire Protection

Criteria address the full range of issues and apply to all types of pumps including those for high-rise buildings, centrifugal, vertical shaft turbine-type, and positive displacement.

NFPA 72: National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code

Rules cover the application, installation, location, performance, inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire alarm systems, supervising station alarm systems, public emergency alarm reporting systems, fire warning equipment and emergency communications systems (ECS), and their components.

NFPA 96: Standard for Ventilation Control and Fire Protection of Commercial Cooking Operations

Provisions cover the design; installation; operation; and inspection, testing, and maintenance of the full spectrum of cooking equipment, hoods, grease removal devices, exhaust duct systems, fans, fire suppression systems, and clearance to combustibles.

NFPA 101: Life Safety Code®

Provisions are included for all types of occupancies, with requirements for egress, features of fire protection, sprinkler systems, alarms, emergency lighting, smoke barriers, and special hazard protection.

NFPA 2001: Standard on Clean Agent Fire Extinguishing Systems

This standard contains minimum requirements for total flooding and local application clean agent fire extinguishing systems. It does not cover fireextinguishing systems that use carbon dioxide or water as the primary extinguishing media, which are addressed by other NFPA documents.

Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS)

The Certified Fire Protection Specialist Board (CFPS) was formed in 1971 for the purpose of documenting competency and offering professional recognition for individuals involved in fire protection, fire safety, and fire prevention. In 1998, CFPS and NFPA partnered to jointly offer this highly regarded certification program.

The CFPS Board credential has been awarded to more than 2,000 professionals and is internationally recognized as a mark of achievement within the fire protection field. This group of professionals includes risk managers, loss control specialists, fire officers, fire marshals, fire inspectors, safety managers, fire protection consultants, designers, code enforcers, loss prevention professionals, building code officials, commercial real estate managers and others who have responsibilities dealing with the application of fire safety, fire protection, prevention, and suppression technologies.
